A NOTE FROM A PHARMACIST:
STEROID-SPARING effects of EMOLLIENTS
Effective use of emollients can actually have a steroid-sparing effect; that is to say the beneficial effects of the steroids treatment are achieved at a lower dose then if the steroid product had been used alone.
An emollient is a moisturizing treatment that is applied directly to the skin to soothe and hydrate it. It creates a protective film over the skin to trap in moisture, which helps manage dry, itchy or scaly skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and ichthyosis.
But note: The effects of emollients are short-lived and they should be applied frequently even after improvement occurs.
